Laser-Based Space Debris Removal

Laser-Based Space
Debris Removal

Laser-based space debris removal aims to alter the orbits of debris fragments through targeted momentum transfer. At the heart of this approach is a high-power laser source that must deliver sufficient optical energy and concentrate it onto a small target area over long distances. In addition to output power, a high beam quality and stable, precisely controllable operation are essential.

High-energy laser systems based on coherent beam combining (CBC) are particularly well suited to power scaling. By precisely controlling the relative phases of multiple laser beams, their outputs can be combined to achieve very high power while maintaining high beam quality. This makes CBC a promising approach for delivering the intensities required over orbital distances.

For laser-based space debris removal, CBC is considered a key enabling technology. Rather than relying on a single extremely powerful laser source, CBC combines multiple fiber lasers into one coherent beam with significantly higher total power. This approach offers several important advantages: Fiber lasers provide excellent electrical efficiency, thermal management, scalability and reliability compared to traditional bulk laser architectures.

CBC also addresses critical limitations of single-aperture laser systems. As laser power increases, thermal effects, nonlinearities and beam distortions can significantly reduce beam quality and targeting precision. By coherently combining many smaller laser channels with active phase control, CBC systems can maintain high beam quality while scaling to much higher power levels. In addition, modular laser architectures simplify maintenance, improve redundancy and allow flexible system expansion.

Another major challenge for ground-based laser systems is atmospheric turbulence. Variations in air density and temperature distort the laser beam during propagation. CBC architectures can partially compensate for these effects.

FiberBridge Photonics’ CBC high-energy laser systems provide a solution for these high-intensity applications. CBC systems coherently combine multiple laser channels into a single high-brightness output beam while maintaining excellent beam quality. This allows the laser power to be scaled far beyond 100 kW while still maintaining excellent beam quality (M² ~ 1).
